Course Numbering System
All courses are designated by an Alpha designation and three digit number.
• The alpha designation indicates the discipline area of the course;
• The first numeric digit indicates level;
• The second numeric digit indicates a thematic group;
• The third digit indicates sequence within the group.
Levels (First Numeric Digit)
1 Introductory courses (no prerequisites)
2 Introductory courses (may have prerequisites)
3 Relatively specialized courses (may have level 1 or 2 courses as prerequisites)
4 Highly specialized courses (have prerequisites and include independent studies and senior practica)

SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology (6) (A)
A systematic introduction to the scientific perspective of sociology. The following areas will be treated: culture, socialization, groups, social stratification, associations, collective behaviour, population, ecology, the family, religion, education, minorities, deviant behaviour, and urban and political issues. SOC 210 Social Problems (3) (A)
An examination of one or more contemporary social problems, other than crime and delinquency. Issues that might be addressed include AIDS, native issues, racism, poverty, war, overpopulation, and drug abuse. (formerly 2.350) Prerequisite: SOC 100.
SOC 240 Sociology of Families (3) (B) [or possibly named Gender, Race and Class, or Social Stratification]
A study of the functions and structures of the family and its place in society. Topics include courtship, engagement, marriage and subsequent adjustments. Non-traditional family structures will also be studied. (formerly 2.354) Prerequisite: SOC 100.

SOC 360 Ethnic Relations (3) (O)
The role and function of ethnicity in society will be examined. Prerequisite: SOC 100 and at least one other SOC course at the 2XX level.
SOC 370 Religion and Social Issues (3) (O) [probably re-scope this course to a Social Change or Social Movements course]
Current trends in social issues will examined from a sociological perspective, including topics such as poverty, unemployment, urban decay, homelessness and racism. Prerequisite: SOC 100 and at least one other SOC course at the 2XX level.
SOC 372 Sociology of Religion (3) (B)
Religious behaviour in its personal and institutional forms will be studied. The course will focus on the nature and function of religion as social phenomenon. Prerequisite: SOC 100 and at least one other SOC course at the 2XX level.
SOC 380 Social Theory (3) (A)
This course will examine the classical theories of sociology and explore their role in sociological investigation, research and thought. Prerequisite: SOC 100 and at least one other SOC course at the 2XX level.
SOC 395 Selected Themes in Sociology (3) (O)
The content of this course will vary year to year, reflecting the interests and research of the individual instructor. Prerequisite: SOC 100 and at least one other SOC course at the 2XX level.
SOC 400 Research in Sociology (3) (B)
This course allows the student to undertake a research project under the supervision of a faculty member. It is intended to assist those who are preparing themselves for graduate study in the discipline. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor.
SOC 495 Independent Study in Sociology (3) (B)
This course allows the student to undertake independent study on a topic of special interest. It is intended to assist those who are preparing themselves for graduate study in the discipline. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor.(formerly 2.355/4.455)
