Roy R Jeal, PhD
Professor of Biblical Studies
Roy R Jeal is Professor of Biblical Studies at Booth College. His PhD is from the University of Sheffield, England. His teaching focuses on the New Testament and biblical hermeneutics, but he is fascinated by all aspects of the study of the Bible, theology, pastoralia and related subjects. A life-long interest in reading and understanding how things work pushes him to want to understand how the New Testament describes Jesus Christ, faith, what God does in the world and how these things are meaningful. He is deeply interested in how literary texts like those of the New Testament function, and how they convey ideas and meanings to their readers. He is passionate about teaching and students. He is energized when people learn from the Bible, discovering how it can be life-giving and when they find that they are grasping that the deepest realities are of a religious nature. His current research and writing centres on literary, rhetorical and socio-rhetorical approaches to interpreting New Testament texts. He publishes widely on biblical interpretation and pastoral topics. He has presented essays in Canada, the US, Britain, Sweden, Germany and South Africa. He takes on frequent speaking and teaching assignments. He is currently preparing socio-rhetorical commentaries on Colossians and Philemon, and socio-rhetorical interpretations of lectionary texts.
Roy has been at Booth College since 1995. He is devoted to family life. When there is time, he enjoys travel, reading good novels and biographies and delighting in the natural environment. He plans to hike the West Coast Trail during the summer of 2008.
