Ian Swan, MA
Associate Dean for Extended Learning
Ian comes to Booth College with many year of international teaching experience. After completing a degree in Ancient History and World Religions, Ian took up a teaching post in 1982 at the Thika Secondary School for the Blind in Kenya where he also served as Choir and Band Master. This was followed by a posting in 1984 as Headmaster to a Nomadic school on the borders of Ethiopia and Sudan. It was here that he confirmed his calling to full time ministry and returned to Canada for training at the Officer Training College in Toronto in 1985 and further studies in Education.
Upon completion of his studies, Ian was responsible for the supervision of three Adult Group Homes for the Developmentally Handicapped in Toronto while pending appointment as an Extension Training Officer in Zambia and Malawi. For seven years, Ian was responsible for the In-Service and Management Training Program for all Salvation Army personnel.
Appointed as Training Principal to the Hong Kong Command in October 1996 Ian and his family were present for the Handover Exercises. Having completed two terms and commenced a third Ian then received the appointment of Educational Services Secretary and Supervisor for 31 schools.
Having returned to Canada after 16 years overseas service Ian is presently serving at Booth Colleges as Associate Dean for Extended Learning.
Ian, along with all members of the Swan family are enjoying the re- discovery of winter sports but no one quite shares their dog’s enthusiasm for walks on those evenings with temps of -45 degrees. Coffee, books, and Wendy (not necessarily in that order) are very important to Ian’s sanity.
